CHORAL EVENSONG, JANUARY 27 AT 4:00PM
INTROIT: The Lamb John Tavener
PRECES AND RESPONSES: Herbert Howells
SERVICE MUSIC (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis)
The St. Mark’s Service Gerald Near
ANTHEM: Lux Aurumque Eric Whitacre
Comments from the Director, Ed Franklin: Each season I like to pay homage to Master Herbert Howells for all that he left us. Over the years, the fiendishly difficult Preces and Responses have become a staple in Chorus Angelorum’s repertory, and it seemed appropriate to include Gerald Near’s St. Mark’s Service, composed for The St. Mark’s School in Dallas, in itself a direct salute to Mr. Howells.

Chorus Angelorum, directed by Byron “Ed’ Franklin, is a semi-professional chorus devoted to the propagation and continued use of the traditional music of the Church in the context of its liturgy. The text used for the Evensong is sung using the ancient texts from the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. The language of the Prayer Book has inspired some of the greatest choral music written for the Church in the past 450 years and remains a valuable source for contemporary composers.
The Artistic Director
for Chorus Angelorum, Ed Franklin, also serves as organist and choirmaster
for Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church which uses the traditional Anglican
Use Liturgy approved by Pope John Paul II. Chorus Angelorum has been in
residency at Our Lady of Walsingham since July 2005. The acoustics of the church
are exceptional for this beautiful sung Evening Prayer. The public is cordially
invited. Evensong is sung usually the 4th Sunday of the month at
Of the two Daily Offices within the Anglican communion, Matins or Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, more appropriately called Evensong with the addition of choir and organ, the latter remains a main stay in devotional worship in many Christian communities throughout the world. Observed at the close of day, it affords a time for personal reflection, prayers and praise offered to God for all the blessings of this life and a peaceful observance of the awesomeness and beauty of His creation. The text of this Office, as found in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662 has inspired countless musicians to compose music specifically for this Office, and some of the world's greatest choral composers have been swayed by the language and intent of the texts themselves.
Thomas Tallis, whose 500th anniversary of his birth was celebrated in 2005
and contemporaries William Smith and Christopher Tye recognized the inspiration
of Evensong early on. Four hundred years later, the great 20th century church
musician, Healy Willan, took the old forms and made them relevant to traditional
worshippers. In the music and in the words being offered, it is clear that over
the ages throngs have taken to heart the words of the psalmist when he said: 'O
worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of
him."
