The American Shrine

of Our Lady of Walsingham

We give honor to our patroness, Our Lady of Walsingham, through the erection of this beautiful place of prayer and thanksgiving, and we pray that our parish will continue to be a welcoming place to worship God and to honor our Blessed Mother through the beauty of the Anglican Use liturgy.

The design of the new American shrine was inspired by the one remaining fragment of the east window that was part of the 12th century priory at Walsingham, England, site of the original shrine. Rising thirty-five feet above the altar of its center, the height of the shrine in Houston is exactly half that of the original one in England.  The new cloister provides not only a covered walkway between the church and the parish hall, but also adds a prayerful  element to the space leading up to the Shrine.  A rosary garden with fountain and benches welcomes pilgrims approaching the shrine. Once again, the marble statue of our beloved Lady of Walsingham is enthroned behind the altar with the Child Jesus seated on her knee.

This new shine is a place where the mystery of the Annunciation, the “root of mankind’s gracious redemption,” will be remembered.  It is also a place of veneration of the Holy Family as an example of the sanctity of family life. It is a place that calls the family to come out of the ‘contemporary decadence and modern secularism to return to the Holy House of Nazareth that our homes might become what they are called to be-- ‘the domestic church.’ ”
